The Tower of London has announced Peter McGowran is the new Chief Yeoman Warder.
Yeoman warders, more commonly known as Beefeaters, have been guarding the tower since Henry VIII and Tudor times.
The role of the chief is to look after the Yeoman Body – made up of 37 men and women drawn from the armed forces.
Mr McGowran, from Birmingham, will be assisted by Prestonpans-born Bob Loughlin MBE in the position of Yeoman Gaoler who manages the day-to-day logistics.
The pair have more than 60 years of service in the Royal Air Force between them.
