Scone Spy: Montgomery’s Cafe gives a warm welcome

IT’S Sunday lunchtime and we’ve just spent a pleasant morning reminding ourselves of the riches at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

A childhood haunt for countless Scots, it’s even more of a delight after its 21st Century makeover.

Glorious Spitfire suspended in mid-air. Sir Roger the unfortunate elephant shot over his breakfast. Rembrandt and Dali masterpieces. Check, check, check.

So after our wee cultural feast it’s time for a real one. The gallery’s cafe is buzzing so we look for somewhere a bit less crowded.

And we find it just a few minutes’ walk away opposite the park.

Montgomerys couldn’t be more laid-back if it was horizontal. The light blue-painted timber-clad walls run up to the beautifully corniced ceiling complete with a map of the world.

There are plenty of tables to choose from but it’s a big place and there’s no shortage of fellow diners tucking in. Some in Sunday best, most in dressed-down casuals.

As a seasoned Scone Spy, cafe fayre is second nature but, oh, mistakes can still be made.

Orange drinks are good. Cappuccino is good. Orange-flavoured cappuccino schoolboy error! But the accompanying food more than made up for it.

The Belgium waffle was nicely warmed and the syrup sweet and gorgeous. The waitress helpfully offers to fetch another plate when we decided we just had to share it.

The scone yes, I know you’ve been waiting was fruit-packed, light, fluffy and crumbling to perfection.

Only one little caveat. The raspberry jam barely filled a third of the little silver ramekin and only a single butter accompanied it.

A quick request saw more speed their way to our table, but cafe owners of the county pin back your ears don’t skimp! The cakes looked pretty as a picture and not-so-miniature works of art.

We had a choice between pear and chocolate brownie, strawberry tart, tarte citron, triple chocolate truffles or blueberry frangipane to name just a few.

But the raspberry and mango delice called out to us.

No, really it did. Well, it had ‘eat me’ iced on the top.

Who could refuse? It was light and mousse-like with a nice tang from the raspberry topping. Delicious.

We picked a seat by the window and with some welcome warm sunshine flooding through, it was a cracking choice.

On the other side of the window, there are a couple with the world’s best-behaved dog while a baby sleeps quietly in a pram beside us.

With some quiet music in the background, everyone has that lazy Sunday vibe. Now, if only it weren’t for that darned coffee… Scone score: 8/10
