Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has lent his support to a school’s charity single recorded by one of its pupils.
The Brit Award winner is urging his fans to download the song Soldier, Soldier, which has been recorded by Rachel Ward, a student at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover, Kent.
The song, which features on Sheeran’s website, commemorates the First World War and is raising money for Care For Casualties – The Rifles’ Charity and ABF, The Soldier’s Charity.
Rachel, whose father is a serving member of the British Army, met the pop sensation at one of his concerts and told him about the song.
The 14-year-old said: “While it was amazing to meet Ed Sheeran and record Soldier, Soldier, it’s important to remember those who gave their lives and their families left without a husband, father or son.”
The song was written by Vida Ivatt who sent it to the school’s music department in the hope they would play it.
Major David Cresswell, director of military music at the school, then went on to harmonise and orchestrate the song.
He said: “This is a brilliant opportunity to raise funds for two worthy military charities. We’re also hoping to get the song published into sheet music, so that other schools around the nation can enjoy the song themselves.”
