Previous reports suggested names such as Gear Knobs were being considered and a video released showed the trio brainstorming monikers such as Tripod.

A tongue-in-cheek statement from the trio said they thanked everyone for their suggestions, with an explanation from Jeremy on the final choice:

“Thing is. We’ll be travelling the world hosting each episode in a different country, from a giant tent. It’s a sort of ‘grand tour’, if you like. So we’ve decided to call it ‘The Grand Tour’.”

James admitted he was underwhelmed by the final name, saying: “I wanted to call it ‘Nigel’, or ‘Roger’. We needed a name, and they’re names.”

Richard said: “I already love camping. But this is something else. We are like our pioneering and prospecting forebears, sallying forth into a new frontier of broadcasting, and making our home where…”

The statement ended, adding that at this point in the above conversation “Clarkson and May strangled him (Hammond) with a guy rope”.
