Lap of luxury: We all just love to splash the cash on our cats and dogs

ANDY MURRAY’S Cromlix Hotel has launched a menu of gourmet grub for dogs that includes salmon and meatloaf with chicken jelly.

Created by Albert Roux, the £10.50 meals can be ordered through room service at the five-star Perthshire venue.

While some cat and dog owners splash out on an occasional treat for their pets, others are now spending a fortune on luxury accessories for their animals.

Recent research suggests that British dog owners collectively spent more than £1 billion on “petcessories” last year – an average of £76 per animal.

And that’s excluding essential items like food and veterinary bills.

The study, by Direct Line Pet Insurance, found young pet owners are the most likely to splash out on cushions, collars and clothes for their pets, with 18 to 34-year-olds spending an average of £83.98 on each dog, compared with over-55s who spent £60.26.

Researchers estimated 3.6 million (26%) dog owners spend more than £100 a year on accessories for their dog.

Inevitably, an industry has developed to help provide our pets with things they didn’t realise they needed.
