WE get to know the legendary ice skating duo a little better…

What do you nag Jayne about, Chris? Her eating habits. She eats too much garlic and fish. It’s years of skating nose to nose. Is modern ice skating as good as in your day, Jayne? It’s more physical now, and there’s no time to set a scene, make eye contact or even tell a story. How do you communicate? We can still speak to each other with our eyes if we don’t want others to overhear. We’re able to have a conversation without talking. Jayne, did you know Nottingham misspelled your name when giving you the Freedom of the City? Really? So Chris has got it but not me? It’s actually someone else? I guess I’m not the free woman I thought I was! Do you like looking back on past performances, Chris? Only if they’re good. Sometimes TV people dig out one from the ’70s and I think: “Nooo!” Better as a memory than watching it again.

Torvill and Dean on the ice Chris, What have you learned from your career? That timing is everything, whether it’s skating or knowing when to retire. And that with age comes wisdom. So, Jayne, you didn’t carry on too long? No. I don’t regret coming back 10 years after our Olympic gold. Getting bronze at the ‘94 Olympics caused more of an uproar than if we’d won. Chris, do people ask to see your medals? Yes, it still causes a sharp intake of breath. Then you’re a cool mum, Jayne? Oh no. My kids like seeing the medals, they appreciate them, but it doesn’t get me any mum points. You have 24 hours left to live. How do you spend the time? Jayne Shopping. It’s such a girlie thing but I’d have to do it. I’d buy clothes for everyone. Chris I’d get a Ferrari and start at John O’Groats and drive, really fast, to Land’s End. I wouldn’t need to worry about speeding tickets would I?
