The changing of the seasons means a change in skincare – and we should never forget our lips, according to Rose Dyson, founder of Pura Cosmetics.
“Your lips’ skin is much thinner and more delicate than any other skin on your body so it’s crucial to take the time to care for your pout,” she said.
Pura specialises in ethical lip care, producing handmade scrubs and balms to ensure luscious lips all year round.
“Dry, scaly and sore lips can happen at any time, regardless of the weather, so it’s super important to take care of your lips all year round,” Rose said.
“You may feel your lips are more problematic and chapped at this time of year because, as the weather gets colder and drier, your lips’ delicate thin skin can dry out faster than the rest of our skin. Therefore, your lips may appear cracked, flaky and raw in some areas.
“Cold weather isn’t always the culprit, irritation could also be from your everyday skincare products so not to extending day/night skincare products (moisturiser, toner, etc) to your lips is a top tip.”
Rose says it’s good to establish a lip-care routine, and keep a good balm to hand. “We recommend using products high in emollients. Emollients are highly moisturising ingredients that not only provide hydration but also form a barrier, stopping moisture leaving your lips. Pura Cosmetics Lip Scrubs and Lip Balms contain lots of nourishing emollients such as super-absorbing Coconut Oil that melts seamlessly into your skin, making lips silky smooth.
“Other key ingredients we use are mango and shea butter which have excellent antioxidant properties and are fantastic for repairing damaged and sore skin. They’re also rich in vitamins A and E.”
In terms of the best lip-care routine, Rose suggests regular exfoliation with a lip scrub can help combat flaky, dead skin.
“Apply once or twice a week and we recommend not overdoing it. And always follow up with a lip balm.
“Use it throughout the day and then just before bedtime for an extra surge of moisture.
“It sounds simple but hydration and drinking lots of water leads to lots of benefits for your skin in general but especially your lips.
“Try not to lick your lips. Once the saliva evaporates, it takes away extra moisture from your skin. Also avoid biting or peeling flaky skin. It will only make them look and feel worse and it leads to slower healing.
“If your lips are feeling particularly flaky and in need of a slightly more intense treatment, opt for one of the Pura Cosmetics ultra-gentle lip scrubs and remember to balm after exfoliating too.”
