Storm Jorge will park itself over the Highlands today, whipping up 70mph winds and blizzard conditions across many parts of Scotland.

As the eye of the storm will linger over the Inverness area until tomorrow, it is on his southern flanks where the highest winds will be recorded.

Yesterday, the storm lashed Wales with torrential rain, leading to South Wales Police declaring a “critical incident”.

In Ireland, Met Eireann imposed a red warning for wind across Galway and County Clare, advising people to stay indoors rather than face dangerous winds of 90mph.

It began moving towards Scotland yesterday afternoon, resulting in yellow “be aware” warnings for wind and snow, mainly in the north and south of the country. The wind warning affects south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and western parts of Strathclyde.

The Met Office warning states that winds of 50-60mph can be expected quite widely, with gusts to 70mph.

Greg Dewhurst of the Met Office said it was unusual to have three named storms within the same month, after Storms Ciara and Dennis hit earlier in February.

He said: “It’s all down to a very powerful jet stream dominating our weather for the entire month of February. Early statistics suggest Scotland has just endured its third-wettest February on record.”
