VIDEO: Fire breaks out at Glasgow School of Art for second time in four years

FOR the second time in four years, a fire has broken out at Glasgow School of Art.

Firefighters are tackling the blaze in the Mackintosh Building, which has been undergoing restoration work since the previous fire back in May 2014.

Bright flames and a cloud of smoke could be seen across the city as emergency services dealt with the situation.

Glasgow School of Art tweeted at 11:57pm: “There is a fire at the Mackintosh Building. The fire brigade are currently on scene. We will report back with news updates as soon as possible.”

Eyewitnesses took to social media to share video and pictures of the scene.

Abbie wrote: “I absolutely can not believe the Glasgow School of Art is on fire again. I am absolutely devastated for all the staff and especially the students. All their hard work and their showcases ruined, can’t even imagine how they’re feeling.”

Enid tweeted: “OMG! Glasgow School Of Art is on fire again! 3 years after it was gutted by a fire that wiped out countless Charles Rennie Macintosh beauties. And the degree show will be on, all that work, this is heartbreaking!”

Graham Ruthven wrote: “Can see the Glasgow School of Art fire from my window in the West End. Huge fire. Can’t believe it’s happening again.”

And Outlander star Sam Heughan said: “Huge fire in Glasgow! Hope everyone is safe. Looks like Glasgow School of Art..? So sad. Stay safe Glasgow.x”

The blaze is the latest to hit the city.

Eight people were injured after a fire broke out in a flat in the Gorbals on Thursday.

And part of Sauchiehall Street remains closed as repair work takes place following a huge fire in March at Victoria’s nightclub.
