TV: A blether with Sir Billy Connolly is becoming a Christmas tradition

At the risk of sounding like someone reporting back from a visit to an elderly relative, Billy Connolly is looking well.

That’s what it’s like, though, isn’t it? Every once in a while we get to catch up with The Big Yin and see how life is treating him.

For the second year ITV visited Billy in his Florida home for a wee blether punctuated with excerpts from his sublime stand-up career.

If the weather Connolly now enjoys in his Sunshine State dotage is a small tonic at this time of year then the patter, both classic and new, is a large one.

Connolly wandered through a Florida market with his daughter and met a devoted fan whom he proceeded to gently mock. Connolly then watched the outdoor yoga class.

“I did it in LA,” he mused. “Everybody’s folding like a clasp knife and you’re standing farting in the corner.”

Fans will have likely seen the stand-up snippets before but the skill of Connolly’s storytelling has always been so deft that familiarity can’t stop an observation jabbing through to your ribs and tickling them.

Particularly funny was how your identity disappears when you’re in the cludgie and someone opens the door. “Somebody is in,” you cry, unable to utter your own name.

Ach you had to be there. Hopefully Billy is on ITV next Christmas too.
