Lorraine Kelly partners with STV to launch emergency campaign for children affected by coronavirus

Scotland’s vulnerable children need help now more than ever thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

With many families out of work, children unable to see friends and no sign of Scotland’s lockdown being lifted just yet, many of the country’s young people need extra support during this hard time.

Helping young people in need is the focus of a new STV campaign, the Children’s Appeal Emergency Coronavirus Campaign. Fronted by TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, the campaign has been launched in response to the devastating impact Covid-19 is having on families across the country.

The Children’s Appeal has joined forces with the National Emergencies Trust (NET) to raise and distribute money for and support victims at times of domestic disasters.

The Appeal also works with hundreds of charities across Scotland, which are currently facing increased pressure to care for those affected by coronavirus and are in desperate need of additional funding. The campaign is asking people who are able to donate to give what they can.

Donations of five pounds could provide internet access to a young person feeling cut off from others while self-isolating, whereas donations of 10 pounds could provide a day of gas and electricity to heat a family home, or provide essential food and household items like nappies.

Lorraine Kelly, trustee of the Children’s Appeal, said: “The generosity of the people of Scotland never fails to amaze me.  We know that everyone has been affected by this crisis, but some are hit far worse than others.

“If you can help, no donation is too small, and the team will make sure it goes directly to the families who will benefit most from your kindness in these tough times.”

Chief Executive of STV, Simon Pitts, added: “We know from the conversations we’re having with our charity partners that COVID-19 is having a profound impact on local Scottish communities, with lots of families struggling with the most basic of needs.

“Working in close partnership with the NET, who are expert in responding to disasters like this, will ensure that all funds raised from our amazing STV viewers are distributed as quickly and efficiently as possible to those in need.”

In nine years, the STV Children’s Appeal has raised over £21 million to provide much-needed support to over 95,000 children and young people.
