Scots BBC News corespondent Laura Bicker on covering the biggest stories from the US and new Korea role

SHE has reported on mass shootings, fatal hurricanes and the election of one of the most controversial US Presidents of all time.

But intrepid news correspondent Laura Bicker’s next assignment for the BBC could be even more demanding.

The Scots reporter has revealed she is being posted to South Korea which is in the crosshairs of mad North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un.

Laura – who grew up in Ayrshire and has been with the BBC 16 years – has covered some of the biggest stories breaking from America since being dispatched to Washington in 2015.

But the high-flying journalist last night said that although she will miss her Stateside colleagues, she can’t wait to start her new job.

“I’ve loved working in Washington and travelling to stories across the US,” she told The Sunday Post. “But it’s now time for a new challenge.

“The eyes of the world are on the Korean Peninsula and the war of words between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

“I look forward to bringing that story, with all its complex history, to BBC audiences around the world.”

The move caps a whirlwind two years for Laura. On her arrival in the US, she was thrust straight into covering the race for the White House which finally saw Trump installed as President in January.

In early September she was the first foreign journalist to reach the Caribbean island of Barbuda which was devastated by Hurricane Irma. At the start of this month, she was on the ground in Las Vegas following the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival.

In recent weeks she has been covering the explosive scandal involving disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Now Laura – whose hobby is paragliding – is expected to take the move to Seoul in her stride. “When it comes to taking a leap for my career I don’t worry about it too much,” she said.
