JOHN MCGINN has left Hibs for Championship side Aston Villa.

The Scotland midfielder, who had also been the subject of bids from Celtic, has signed a four-year deal at the club.

The fee is undisclosed, but Hibs look set to bank around £2m from the transfer, with former club St Mirren also receiving some of the fee thanks to a sell-on clause.

23-year-old McGinn joined the Easter Road club from the Buddies in 2015 and was part of the Scottish Cup winning side of 2016.

He helped the club earn promotion back to the Premiership and found his way into the Scotland squad.

He netted 18 goals and made 138 appearances for the Hibees.

McGinn told the Aston Villa website: “I’m really pleased to have joined the club. I’ve already visited Villa Park and the training ground and the set-up is incredible.

“The last 24 hours have been a bit of a whirlwind with so much going on but I can’t wait to take part in my first training session and make my debut.”

Hibs boss Neil Lennon said: “He goes with everyone’s best wishes – he’s been absolutely superb on and off the pitch. He’s a joy to work with and I’ve really enjoyed watching him play.”

Chief Executive Leeann Dempster said: “John has been a fantastic servant to this club over the last three years. He has developed as a player and an individual in his time here – it’s been a great environment for him.”
