Scone Spy: A perfect Saturday at Peckhams, Helensburgh

Peckhams has been a trusted place to eat and drink in Glasgow for decades.

After being acquired by the G1 Group, it was temporarily closed. But now back in the hands of its founder, Tony, its flagship store in the city’s Hyndland neighbourhood reopened in 2021 and it has now expanded, with a new establishment in Helensburgh.

As regulars to this column know, I have a soft spot for this town. Set down on the shores of the Clyde at the end of the 18th Century, James Colqhoun built it as a place to escape the grime and smog of Glasgow. These days it is undergoing a foodie revolution, with Peckham’s the latest of many new eateries to open here.

Handily situated next to the railway station, it is a 50-minute train ride from Glasgow and one hour 45 minutes from Edinburgh.

When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, it had only opened its doors two weeks before, so there was a nervous energy in the air. The on-the-ball waiting staff seemed very happy to be there, though, and we were quickly seated. The menu offered a selection of sweet and savoury crepes, mains and all-day brunch items, from eggs Benedict to French toast.

I ordered the cheeseburger which came with handcut chunky chips and my friend opted for the fish crepe, with truffle chips on the side. The burger was delicious; the bun warm and sweet, the patty made from quality beef mince, topped with cured bacon and a zingy tomato jam. My friend loved his crepe, which he improved on with a squish of fresh lemon to cut through the tasty but “very creamy” sauce.

The portions were generous but there was still room for a scone, of course. They offer plain or fruit which our server told us were baked on the premises. The fruit variety ticked all the boxes: springy texture on the inside, with a golden crust and homemade winter berry compote.

After, we made our way up the main street to visit Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House. A perfect end to a perfect Saturday.
