Overnight charity cycle challenge Nightrider to return to Glasgow this summer

A pedal-powered charity challenge is returning to Glasgow this summer.

The Nightrider fundraiser on June 22/23 sees cyclists take on an overnight circuit of either 50km or 100km in aid of good causes.

Organisers of the event, which debuted in the city last year, say it’s all about seeing the sights as well as having a great night out with friends and family for a good cause.

Unlike other events, Nightrider is not timed and is not a race, with the aim simply to raise £1 million in one night.

Charity partners for the event include British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK and Polycystic Kidney Disease, as well as local charities such as Beatson Cancer Charity and CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland).

Alternatively, riders can register any charity of their choice to support.

The challenge is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is prepared to put in some training beforehand. There are two distances to choose from – 50km or 100km.

The circular ride will start and finish on the banks of the Clyde at Pacific Quay, beside the River Clyde, with the route taking in Glasgow’s four football grounds, Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, the riverside, Barrowlands and Sauchiehall Street.

Dave Wilson took part in Glasgow Nightrider 2018 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

He said: “It’s a night out like no other, a night out you will remember for the sense of pride and achievement on completion.

“A night out you stood tall, peddled hard and raised money for those who need it.”

Organised by leading charity tour operator Classic Challenge, Nightrider is clearly sign-posted so that riders can cycle at their own pace.

There are break stops every 25km plus medical support and mechanical backup are provided throughout the night.

Everyone receives a well-earned breakfast and medal at the finish line.

The event is supported by Cycle Republic (official mechanical partner) and Virgin Money Giving (official fundraising partner).

Nightrider events will also be taking place in London, Bristol and Liverpool in 2019.
