Ross King: The Night Manager wasn’t Fawlty at the Globes

HERE we go again!

Last week I once again donned the tux and prepared some probing questions for the bold and the beautiful of Hollywood.

That’s right – it’s awards season so last week I was doing my best to trouble the nominees at the Bafta Tea Party one night, the Golden Globes the next.

I’m now a bit of a veteran of these things.

In fact, I’ve trodden more red carpets than the janny at Pittodrie.

The Golden Globes was a great night for the Brits.

When I heard there was a show about a hotel manager who deals with things going wrong, I thought it was a remake of Fawlty Towers.

But it was in fact spy thriller The Night Manager, which landed a clutch of awards for Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman.

I chatted with Hugh – who plays the baddie in the classy six-parter – before the show and he told me he fancied the leading role back when he read the book 20 years ago.

Now he’s realised that being evil is good. It’s a long way from Bertie Wooster!

Tom is, of course, a heart-throb these days, after baring his bum more often than a member of the Tartan Army at an away game.

None other than Miss Piggy tweeted Tom later asking if he wanted to snuggle up after the show.

When I said Tom would bring home the bacon that isn’t what I meant.

Another big winner was Claire Foy, who scooped an acting gong for The Crown, the glossy Netflix series you really HAVE to watch.

I bumped into Claire at the Bafta awards the previous night and she was totally lovely – she told me not much has changed since starring as The Queen.

“Everything has continued as normal!” said Claire, as she walked the red carpet with co-star John Lithgow, who played Winston Churchill in the blockbuster drama.

“I’ve met some incredible people who will be friends for life.

“It was a real test in that I’m surprised everyone trusted I could do it! I was like, ‘Are you sure?’”

Yes, we’re sure!
