Scone Spy: Our critic stops off at Nethy House cafe, Strathspey

There is nothing quite so restorative as fresh, crisp, country air, don’t you agree?

I was fortunate enough to venture to the north of Scotland recently, donning waterproofs and lacing up my walking boots for a thoroughly muddy hike in the Cairngorms National Park. It was hard work, particularly for my knees, but I was rewarded with stunning views – and, of course, a well-earned post-walk treat.

Having done a little re-scone-issance before my trip, I knew I wanted to visit Nethy House, a lovely little café in Nethy Bridge, a picturesque village in Strathspey, about 10 miles north of Aviemore. I had spotted a picture of their doorstep-sized scones on social media and, well, I couldn’t leave the Highlands without trying one for myself.

The café, which also boasts five en-suite guest rooms, is just gorgeous. It’s just the kind of place that’s perfect for resting wearing bones, with mismatched furniture, vintage crockery and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Seriously, the servers’ smiles shone through their Covid-safe masks!

Plonking myself down at one of the sun-lit tables, I ordered a coffee and some avocado on toast with a side of sausages, but it was hard to choose from such a varied and enticing menu. As well as homemade soup, filled sandwiches and daily specials (during my visit it was beef and cranberry sausage rolls), there was also a selection of breakfast staples. Plus, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free – you name it, there was an option for every dietary requirement.

My plate virtually licked clean and only the dregs of my coffee remaining, I set my sights on the display case packed with cakes.

Although a very light and fluffy sponge topped with thick icing caught my eye, I showed some restraint and ordered just one scone to take away. Although that was the extent of my willpower, because I ate the scone in three bites while sitting in my car. It really was that tempting – fresh, perfectly packed with fruit and utterly delicious.

Next time I’m in the area, I’ll definitely make a return visit. In fact, the cakes were so good, I might make a special trip…

Scone score

A fruity, freshly baked delight.
