With spring not too far away, trips to the beach or a local loch are becoming increasingly appealing.
If you are looking to plan your next stroll along white sands or dip in blue waters, we asked Glasgow-based Gemma Edgar for her favourite spots for inspiration.
Silver Sands of Morar
The Silver Sands of Morar is just one of those places that never loses its magic. No matter the season, these pristine white beaches always feel like a hidden paradise.
I’ve spotted starfish along the shore, paddle-boarded in the clear turquoise waters, and spent evenings with friends, camp chairs, and good food—soaking up the beauty of Scotland’s west coast.
There’s something about the way the light hits the sand, the way the water shifts with the tides, and the pure stillness of it all that makes every visit feel special. Whether you’re here for an adventure or just to breathe it all in, it’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Cormonachan Woods Loch Goil
Loch Goil has a hold on me like no other place in Scotland. There’s something about the way the mountains rise around the loch, the way the water teems with life—starfish, jellyfish, crabs, and sometimes even a curious seal—that makes it feel like a hidden world all of its own.
After the stunning drive through the glen, the road suddenly opens up to reveal Loch Goil in all its beauty—a view that still takes my breath away no matter how many times I see it.
One of my favourite walks here is the Cormonachan Woods Waterfalls trail. The path winds through peaceful woodland, leading to a contemplation shelter with the most incredible view over the loch. Then, just when you think the scenery couldn’t get any better, you stumble upon the waterfalls—tucked away in the heart of the forest, like a secret waiting to be found.
I hope anyone who visits feels the same sense of wonder I do every time I return.
Inchcailloch Island – Loch Lomond
Whether you paddle over from Balmaha, take the little wooden boat, or hop on the Cruise Loch Lomond ferry from Luss, the journey to Inchcailloch Island always feels like you’re leaving civilisation behind. And in this day and age, if that’s not a delight, I don’t know what is.
This little island has everything—a beautiful beach where you can catch the most incredible sunsets, picnic tables perfect for a lazy afternoon, a wooden pier that feels like something from a postcard, and even a hidden burial ground tucked away in the woods. But the real highlight is the hike to the summit. It’s not too long, a little difficult, but the reward? Panoramic views over Loch Lomond that make you feel like you’re standing on top of the world.
For the past few summers, I’ve spent countless days here with friends—paddleboarding over, taking the boat, having picnics on the beach, and walking the trails. No matter how many times I visit, it never loses its magic. It’s a little slice of paradise, right in the heart of Loch Lomond.
