Meet the Instagran: Joan Hare, 67, volunteer teacher in Sri Lanka

Post Thumbnail

Every week we take a sneak peek into a P.S. reader’s photo album.

Joan Hare, 67, divides her life between the pretty fishing village of Crovie, on Aberdeenshire’s Dolphin Coast, Leamington Spa in England, and the island of Sri Lanka, where she volunteers as a teacher.

Joan has two daughters, and recently welcomed her first grandchild Rhu Robi-Hare into the world.

Here she shared her most precious snaps.

A floral dance

I find myself lucky enough to be living and working between Crovie, Leamington Spa and Sri Lanka.

I have a daughter in Bangladesh and one in London, so travelling is part of my life.

It’s said to be a huge contributor to contentment, so I have no plans to stop.

I do enjoy my time at home though. Leamington Spa is a very pretty Regency Spa town with pump rooms where visitors would “take the waters”.

You know spring has definitely sprung when the wisteria appears.

Craving Crovie

We spend as much time as possible in Crovie, enjoying the ever-changing sea.

The walk from Gardenstown up to St John’s Kirkyard is a favourite. The view across to Crovie is glorious. We have been visiting since my daughters, pictured here, were very small and are now lucky to have our own cottage there.

Generation game

This is my first grandchild Rhuh (pronounced Roo) aged six weeks.

This photo is taken in front of a painting of her mama, my eldest daughter, Molly – so there are three generations of Hares in this shot!

The painting was done by Molly’s school friend, Nicky, for her A-Level art exam. Nicky was going to give it to me but her canny art teacher whispered: “Flog it!”

I was happy to buy it. It’s been on the wall in our dining/kitchen area since then.

Who’s saree now

Teachers in Government schools in Sri Lanka wear a saree. When I started teaching in the country, it took up to an hour and many tears to get the seven metres of fabric on every morning.

Here I am with some of my students in one of our small rural schools.

It’s a real privilege. The work of the Senahasa Association has made a huge difference to many people over the last 14 years.
