30 years on: Lockerbie, the victims

22 December 1988. The nose section of the crashed Pan Am jumbo jet in Lockerbie. (PA).

IT was a flight full of hope as many of the passengers looked forward to Christmas, heading home to be reunited with their families at the happiest time of the year.

On board Pan Am Flight 103 were professors and puppeteers, soldiers, students and bankers, babies and diplomats, engineers and teachers.

They were not to see their families again after a bomb destroyed the plane above Lockerbie. All 243 passengers and 16 crew were killed along with 11 residents in the town below.

Today, after all that has been said and written about the atrocity, all the tears wept, and words written, all the books and articles, the theories and conspiracies, the legal proceedings and appeals, we remember the names of every victim and the lives lost on what, 30 years on, remains one of Scotland’s – and the world’s – darkest nights.

Williams, Brittany Leigh, two months, American [youngest]

There were two two-month-old babies on board, and Brittany Leigh Williams was the youngest having been born only 70 days prior.

Her mother and father, Bonnie and Eric Williams, were both in the US military, and were returning to their home in Crown Point in New York via Pan Am Flight 103.

Bernstein, Michael Stuart, lawyer, 36, American

Michael Bernstein worked for the U.S. Dept. of Justice’s Office of Special Investigation where he hunted Nazis fleeing from justice.

On December 22 he was returning to the US from Austria, where he had just persuaded the government there to accept the deportation of a former Auschwitz camp guard.

Flick, Clayton Lee, businessman, 25, British; and Bacciochi, Clare Louise, hair stylist, 19, British

A month before, businessman Lee Flick had proposed to hairdresser girlfriend Clare Bacciochi, and he had surprised her with a spur-of-the-moment Christmas trip to New York.

They planned to pick out an engagement ring while there.

Lee and Clare were eventually buried together near the church at which they were to be married.

Swire, Flora MacDonald Margaret, medical student, 23, British

She boarded Pan Am Flight 103 a day before she was due to turn 23 and not long after graduating with a first class medical degree.

Flora Swire’s death prompted father Dr Jim Swire to become one of the leading spokespeople of the victims’ group UK Families Flight 103.

She was travelling to the States to spend Christmas with her American boyfriend.

Ciulla, Frank, banker, 45, American

New Yorker Frank died in the tragedy but died but landed seemingly otherwise physically unharmed, strapped to his seat, in the farm of Margaret and High Connell.

The couple formed a bond with Frank’s family and their poignant letter to ‘Our Frank’ and his family was read aloud at a memorial service at Arlington Cemetery in Washington.

Bright, Nicholas, businessman, 32, American

Nicholas Bright was in London on business and due to return back to his home in Massachusetts when he was delayed. He rebooked a later journey, the ill-fated Flight 103.

Nicholas was survived by his widow, and a six-month old son — who later opened a memorial to the victims, along with US President Bill Clinton
