Scone Spy: Just the business! The Space at Doubletree Hilton’s scones are a delight

The Space at Hilton DoubleTree Scone Spy
The Space at Hilton DoubleTree Scone Spy

They say you should never mix business with pleasure. But when you’re in the business of tasting scones, it has to be said there are few days in the working week that aren’t very pleasurable.

And today is one of those days… I know, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!

With its green walls and contemporary mood lighting, The Space certainly gives off a chilled vibe.

Other tables are deep in conversation about plans and data and synergy. Or awash with laptops and piles of paperwork.

It’s clearly a popular haunt with business types.

Well, it is in the middle of a business park.

But equally there are people like me, curled up on a sofa, relaxing with a newspaper or a good book. It’s one of those places you can just whittle the hours away without even realising.

And so spacious, as the name suggests, that you can can either be in the midst of the hustle and bustle, or take yourself off to a quiet corner, whatever your preference might be.

A cheery waitress greets me and takes my order.

The menu is varied, from soups, sandwiches and salads to home comforts such as pizza and pasta.

Most of it sounds so good, it’s tough deciding what to choose.

I plump for the club sandwich, thinking that should leave me plenty of room for the all-important scone.

But when it arrives, I realise it’s no light lunch. Stacked with fillings, it barely fits in my mouth.

And there are fries and slaw on the side.

Knowing the importance of my job though, no matter how full I am, I can always squeeze in a scone. And, for once, I’m glad it takes a little while to arrive.

When it does, I can say it was absolutely worth the wait.

Bursting with big juicy raisins and with a sugary coating on the top, it, again, was sizeable, and came with not only jam but a little cream on the side too. Absolute perfection.

The coffee – there’s a Starbucks in house – was pretty good, too.

I’m somewhat amazed at my stamina, but manage every last crumb. Well, we all know in my line of work it would be rude not to.

I sift through another few chapters of my book while letting it settle.

Then, it’s back to business – and, with the hotel boasting a swanky health club next door, this afternoon my office is the gym.

After all, that scone isn’t going to work itself off.
