How to help homeless people across Scotland have a warm Christmas dinner for just £5

SCOTS are being urged to spare what they can to help provide a homeless person with a Christmas dinner or a small gift this year.

The Social Bite charity has once again teamed up with deal site itison to offer the chance to give the gift of a hot meal to someone for just £5.

The charity also want to make sure that homeless children, families and individuals get a gift to open on Christmas morning.

It follows the Sleep In The Park event at the weekend, which saw thousands opt to brave the elements for one night to raise money for those who do not have that choice.

There have been almost 300,000 donations since the Christmas initiative was first launched several years ago.

Social Bite say that the amount received means that no homeless person has been turned away from their cafes since they began fundraising in 2014.

This year, the initiative has also expanded to Manchester and Newcastle, where they will partner with local charities.

Spreading kindness this Christmas

A homeless man on the street in Glasgow (Andrew Cawley / DC Thomson)

Christmas can be an incredibly tough and lonely time for those living on Scotland’s streets.

Social Bite’s initiative is just one way in which you can give one of the greatest gifts of all – kindness.

Many charities offer support to homeless people to help them stay warm, fed, and try to get a roof over their head over the festive period.

Charities like Shelter, Crisis and Turning Point, among others, will accept donations and can advise on how best to help anyone you see living on the street.

They can also point you in the direction of any opportunities to volunteer at shelters or as part of street teams.

Just saying hello and taking a moment to chat to a homeless person can also make an immeasurable difference, as could buying a small gift for them or food for their pet.
