A collection of rare British Railways posters advertising trips to Scotland up to 70 years ago has fetched more than £3,500 at auction.
The posters were designed in the 1950s to entice people to Scotland and promote the romance of rail travel to the country.
The vintage lithographs included spectacular images ranging from the Scott Monument in Edinburgh to picturesque lochs in the Highlands.
The artworks were painted by leading British poster artists of their day, including Jack Merriott, Claude Buckle, Frank Sherwin and Kenneth Steel.
A set of six collected by an enthusiast based in the west of Scotland went under the hammer at McTear’s in Glasgow, where competition from bidders online and by telephone saw the group far exceed its £2,100 estimate.
The leading lot was British Railways’ Loch Etive Western Highlands poster.
Valued at just £200-300, the lithograph by artist Merriott fetched more than four times the upper estimate, eventually going to a phone bidder for £1,220.
Another highlight was a sought-after 1950s British Railways image, also by Merriott, depicting the West Highland Line.
The original 102cm x 127cm lithograph, showing travellers in the observation coach of a train admiring the views from Lochy Viaduct near Fort William, made £600.
