Graeme Murty won’t do walking away if overlooked for Rangers manager job

GRAEME MURTY will not quit Rangers if he fails to get the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The caretaker boss is keen to take over from Pedro Caixinha after taking charge of the first team for the second time this year.

But he’s not so desperate for a frontline job that he will look elsewhere if the Ibrox club go for a man with more experience.

He said: “I’ve been thinking about that one for a while. I won’t be looking for another job at the moment.

“I’m in possibly the best learning environment that I’ve been in, personally and professionally.

“If the Board ask someone else to come in, and I was to go back to the Under-20s, I have a fantastic project there that I can get my teeth into. It is too good to turn down.”

Rangers set to make their move and announce Derek McInnes as new boss this week

Murty admits returning to his youth coach duties is quite a contrast from being the main man in a first-team match.

But that just helps to convince him that Rangers is where he wants to be.

He went on: “The last time I went from a full Parkhead, with all the colour and noise, to one man and a dog for a training game. It was a very, very stark difference.

“But I think that any club would be hard-pushed to match this one in terms of emotion and history, and just the general match-day experience, because it is so spectacular.”

Rangers’ midfielder Jason Holt says this Rangers squad enjoys working with Murty.

Does he believe the players would welcome his appointment on a full-time basis?

“I think so, yes. But it’s not up to me to decide that,” he said.

“He’s approachable, you can speak to him about anything regarding the game and he’ll give you a straightforward answer.

“He gets our respect when he comes in. We know he’s a good coach.”

While Holt is just pleased to be back playing for Rangers after being frozen out by Caixinha, his team-mate Ryan Jack has been recalled to the Scotland squad.

Graeme Murty doesn’t believe that suggestions Malky Mackay will play him at right-back will faze Jack.

He said: “He’s a clever footballer and has a number of outstanding weapons. Ryan is someone you can give tactical instructions to and see it deployed at a high level.

“The call-up will give Ryan a cross-pollination of ideas that will help him.”

“It can just be a different kind of touch, a different way of seeing the game, different communication skills.

“For Ryan, it definitely is an enhancement of what is already there.”
