Debunking the make-up myths

THERE’S nothing wrong with breaking the rules every now and then.

In fact, there are numerous supposed pearls of wisdom which simply don’t stand up to scrutiny. Our sister publication, No. 1 Magazine, rewrites the beauty rulebook …

Soft touch?

Some say that primer can be replaced with a moisturiser. However, the basic purpose of a primer is to act as a barrier between your skin and your foundation to make sure it doesn’t clog your pores, therefore avoiding breakouts. It’s also a base for foundation or face make-up that allows it to last longer. A moisturiser, however, works as a softening cream for the skin.

Shades better

It was always assumed that concealer should be applied before foundation. Now it has been established that order should be reversed. Why? A foundation works to even out your skin tone and hide flaws. However, concealer helps to cover flaws that cannot be hidden by foundation. You don’t want to end up applying too much product to your face, as it can result in your make-up looking and feeling heavy. Also, contrary to popular belief, don’t use a concealer that is lighter than your skin. The closer the shade is to your skin, the better.

Air rage

Pumping the mascara wand in and out the tube gets rid of clumps… right? Wrong! It just pushes air into the tube and causes the mascara to dry out – and no one wants to chuck their mascara out before it’s sell by date!

Red light

Red lipstick isn’t for everyone? Another myth! You just need to find the shade that matches your skin tone. Red lipsticks are available in different undertones. Blue undertones in reds are very flattering.

Sleep well …

According to some experts, you don’t always need to remove make-up before going to bed. Don’t listen to them! It’s actually extremely harmful to your skin. Our skin regenerates, moisturises and becomes fresher while sleeping. If you leave your make-up on overnight, your pores will clog and it can lead to skin dehydration and infections.
