Cold weather to hit Scotland over Easter weekend with snow possible

The weekend is set to turn colder, especially in Scotland (Met Office)

IF you were hoping for a holiday weekend heatwave, it looks like you’re going to be very disappointed.

The Met Office has forecast a bleak weekend thanks to an Icelandic air plume bringing cold weather and scattered rain showers.

Temperatures aren’t set to reach much higher than 7-12 degrees, and Scotland could even see some snow on Easter Sunday and Monday.

Met Office spokesman Nicky Maxey said: “It’s certainly not bikini weather. People shouldn’t let it stop them -getting out and enjoying themselves this weekend but it certainly isn’t wall-to-wall sunshine.

“When the cloud comes over and you suffer a shower or two, it’s going to feel pretty chilly.

“Friday will feel cold, too with the risk of heavy showers in the north of Scotland. We’re expecting thunder on Shetland, along with some hail.

“It’s not all doom and gloom. You just have to dress for the conditions. As we’re further on in the year, there’s still the chance of suffering sunburn during the sunny spells you might get.”

It won’t quite get as chilly as Easter 2013, where a record low temperature for that time of year was recorded in Braemar.

The mercury dipped to a frosty -12.5 degrees.

Snow has been a regular feature at Easter, very dependant on where it falls on the calendar.

Most recently, 33 cm of snow was recorded at Easter on 3 April 2010 in Strathdearn Dalrossie in Inverness-shire.
