Charly Clive hopes she’s nailed the Scottish accent in new Channel 4 series Pure

ACTRESS Charly Clive’s latest TV role came out of Scotland – and she hopes her performance has the stamp of approval from north of the border.

Charly was spotted doing her comedy show at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe and it put her in the frame for the leading role in new Channel 4 series Pure, which starts this week.

But she had to nail a Scottish accent for the series, based on Rose Cartwright’s memoir about her OCD.

Charly in Pure (Channel 4)

“I’ve got an American mum and an English dad, so I think my accent has always been a bit malleable,” Charly told iN10.

“I actually auditioned in a Scottish accent and Kirsty Swain, who has written the TV adaptation, is Scottish so I felt like I got her initial seal of approval.

“When I got the role I worked with a brilliant dialect coach but I sort of modelled my accent on Kirsty, who comes from the Borders. She has a lovely sing-song quality to her voice which worked well for the character.

“She was always around and would send me helpful voice messages if I got stuck. Quite rightly, people from Scotland will be listening with a keen ear and I just hope that I’ve done it justice.”

Charly as Marnie (Channel 4)

Rose has a form of OCD where she is bombarded with inappropriate thoughts. Her acclaimed memoir has been adapted into the frank six-part comedy which is seen through the eyes of Charly’s character Marnie.

Charly says that, funny though the series is, the OCD is never taken lightly or made the punchline.

“I checked in with Rose as often as possible to make it as authentic as it could be,” she adds. “She was so helpful.

“And when we had therapy sessions they were checked to ensure they were accurate.”
