Beauty Boss: Want to achieve the perfect faux glow? It’s all in the preparation, says YouTube star Jamie Genevieve

From tiger stripes to orange hands, we’ve all had DIY tanning disasters. But you shouldn’t let that put you off using fake tan as it’s still the safest way to have a natural, sun-kissed look.

With the right prep and products, anyone can transform themselves into a golden goddess like our fave sunshine girl, Jennifer Aniston.

Choose wisely

Jamie says: “There are so many tans on the market, from sprays and lotions to mousses and creams.

“Some are instant, others gradual, some you leave overnight, others you put on in the shower.

“My favourite is the ones you put on for an hour, then wash off. This saves having to sleep and getting it all over your bed covers!

“I suggest beginners go with an instant tan, as you can wash it off if it goes wrong, until you feel a bit more confident with the application.”

Be prepared

Jamie admits her skin tone means she’s not a typically pasty Scot, so she saves colouring for special occasions.

“Everyone has their own tanning routine,” she says. “I know people who put tan on every day, and others who do it once a week,” she said.

But however often you do it, getting the perfect tan relies on perfect skincare preparation.

“I would recommend a bath the night before you tan.

“Tan is like make-up – if the skin isn’t cared for, the tan won’t apply properly.

“Make sure you shave, exfoliate and moisturise, paying particular attention to the knees and elbows.

“I use a sugar scrub which helps get rid of dead skin cells.”

Be eagle-eyed

“Choose a product with a colour guide, which helps you see where you’re applying it,” suggests Jamie.

“Start light and build up with layers, or progress on to a darker shade if you want more of a glow.

“That way it’s not too overwhelming – and you can get a feeling of what colour looks best for you.”

For application, Jamie says tanning mitts are best.

“They stop the dreaded tan hands. You get some nice ones that feel velvety.”

Face facts

It’s always good to find a fake tan specifically for your face.

“The skin on your face is different from that on your body,” Jamie explains. “It has different textures and normal tan just doesn’t work the same. It sticks to the dry bits but doesn’t take on the oily bits.

“I use a gradual tanner on my face. In my collaboration with utan, we have produced a tanning water which gives a nice sun-kissed glow. It has Scottish lavender and seaweed, so I use it just before bed.

“It’s so relaxing and helps me get a good night’s sleep.”
