Parts of Glasgow may have been transformed for filming of the new Batgirl movie, but there’s one subtle tribute to Scotland on set – a bottle of Buckfast.

The tonic wine can be seen for sale in the window of a Gotham shop for a discount price of $5, alongside bottles of whisky.

It’s among the intricate details on the Trongate set, which include fictional magazines on a bookshop’s shelves referencing supervillain Lex Luthor and Black Canary, who featured in 2020 DC film Birds of Prey.

Black Canary is also featured on a gig poster in Yolk Diner, which has been created at the former Trans Europe Cafe on Parnie Street.

The Buckfast bottle was spotted in the window of A1 toy shop next door, which has been transformed into Gotham’s Levitz Liquor for the duration of filming.

Another nearby shop has been made into Read’s Books, and galleries on King Street appear to be doubling as a nightclub with the name Bressi above the door – the surname of a mob boss character from the comic franchise.

Scenes were being shot on Thursday night around Glasgow Cross, with numerous vehicles with Gotham number plates on the move.

A Wayne Technologies truck and Gotham police cars were among the attractions for curious locals who gathered to catch a glimpse of the action.

Stars Leslie Grace and Ethan Kai were seen filming at a Christmas market built at the Glasgow Cross site, complete with artificial snow.

Surrounded by masked shoppers, the pair were seen holding hands, clutching hot drinks and exchanging smiles before coming to a stop near a sign for The Bell Tower.

Grace, who stars in In The Heights, will play the film’s title role though Kai’s character is still unknown.

They will star alongside Mummy actor Brendan Fraser, who is set to play DC villain Firefly, and JK Simmons.

Batgirl will focus on Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon.

The film, expected to debut on the HBO Max streaming service in 2022, will be directed by Bad Boys For Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Both El Arbi and Fallah were also pictured on the set.

Where they’re filming

Road closures will also be in place in the Merchant City area of Glasgow over several days in January for filming.

Scenes are set to be shot around Trongate, St Vincent Street and possibly George Square.

According to GlasgowLive, crews will head to the West End to film in an abandoned rail tunnel as well as the derelict St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross.

Filming has also taken place at the old North Glasgow College in Springburn.
