TV review: Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby offers a world of luxury… but Scots castle tops the lot

Few things are more enjoyable right now than kicking back with a glass of wine and tuning in to this show, which features some of the world’s most luxurious hotels…dreaming of that trip of a lifetime when travel can resume again.

Hosts Monica Galetti and Giles Coren have taken us on tours of stunning hotels, from ones with no exterior walls in St Lucia, to the marvellous MGM in Macau…so to see a Scottish location on there took me by surprise.

But, while closer to home, the five-star Torridon Hotel has its own unique qualities. It looks like a fairytale castle for a start. Then there’s the scenery. Sitting on the North Coast 500, The Torridon is one of the most remote hotels in Britain, surrounded by forests, hills and a loch with only a field of Highland coos for company.

Monica and Giles taking on the roles of staff always makes for a laugh, especially when Giles underplumps the cushions and mixes up a table’s orders at dinner.

And he gets brain freeze while joining staff for a dip in the chilly loch out front.

But the pair showcase the best of the hotel, from stargazing and kayaking to the whisky bar with a different dram for every day of the year.

The hotel owners say it has taken them 20 years to get it right – and it’s fair to say time has served them well.

It’s the perfect staycation. Book me in!
