Toyah Willcox – “There are men jokes but it’s not an anti-man show”

Toyah Willcox has never been actually been a housewife, but she’s having a good time playing one on stage.

The singer and actress is starring in a three-month long UK tour of Hormonal Housewives, a comedy by women about women.

Naturally, that doesn’t lead to a lot of men in the audience, but Toyah has encouraged blokes to accompany their partners if they enjoy female humour.

“There are usually about six men out of 900 in the audience,” Toyah laughed. “There are men jokes but it’s not an anti-man show.

“The men do stand out because there are so few of them, but if they enjoy female humour I’d encourage them to come along.

“The show is a lot of fun and it’s like a big comedy hug celebrating the diversity of women.”

Hormonal Housewives was written by Scottish writer and actress Julie Coombe, who also stars alongside Toyah and former Hollyoaks star Sarah Jane Buckley.

“It’s written as a stand-up and we play ourselves,” Toyah continued. “I was a little nervous at first because I hadn’t done anything like it before, but the laughter is so immediate that it gives you a lot of confidence.”

But playing a housewife doesn’t come naturally to the star, who’s been in the limelight since she was 18.

“My mother hated being one and made it known every day, so it’s given me an ingrained fear of it!”

Toyah is still writing, recording and touring new music, 36 years after her first album release.

She added: “Singing is what I do, it’s my day job. It’s not something I ever did or ever could do part-time.”

Hormonal Housewives visits Carlisle, Dunfermline and Glasgow from May 3-5 and Dundee on May 7.
