Emilia, 41, whose Dr Nikki Alexander is at the heart of another hugely popular series of Silent Witness, reveals that criminal-catching is right up her street.

“I have loved the crime genre since I was little,” says Emilia.

“I grew up reading Agatha Christie novels and Sherlock Holmes, and watching Inspector Morse and Cracker.

“So being asked to be part of Silent Witness was a dream come true.

“When I got the part I watched all the Amanda Burton episodes so I got to know the show.

“And I loved that it had crime-solving and the science, where you learn something.

“I consider myself very lucky to be working and doing something I truly enjoy and am interested in.”

Amazingly, next year will be Silent Witness’ 20th anniversary, with viewing figures staying strong long after similar shows have been axed.

“I still look forward to going to work each day and telling the stories,” says Emilia.

“And being with such a wonderful cast, crew and production team who are passionate about the show and its standards.

“I have spent many years with Nikki Alexander and it’s a luxury being so familiar with a character. I am so proud to be part of a show that is about to start filming its 20th series.”

The pathology aspect is as gripping as ever, although Emilia admits: “The scenes that are most challenging to shoot are always the post-mortems.

“It’s everyone’s priority to make sure that whoever is lying on the mortuary slab is as comfortable and relaxed as possible, in a very exposing situation!”

Silent Witness BBC1 Monday 9pm.
