Which Scots could play the next James Bond?

DANIEL CRAIG has reportedly turned down a £98m offer to play James Bond in two more films.

The actor, who last year said he’d rather “slash his wrists” than have a fifth outing as the famous spy, is tipped to be replaced by Avengers star Tom Hiddleston in the iconic role.

But could we see a Scottish actor play 007?

The Bond films have always had a strong Scottish connection. Several locations across the country have been used for filming and, of course, Sean Connery was the first man to take on the role.

Plus, Bond’s father is Scottish.

Here’s our choice of potential candidates for the role – do you think they’d make good or bad Bonds?

James McAvoy

The name’s McAvoy… James McAvoy.

He already has a head start with his first name, but the 37-year-old’s performances in the likes of the X-Men franchise and The Last King of Scotland make him a perfect choice to take on the role.

David Tennant

Broadchurch star Tennant is a versatile performer. We’ve seen the darker side of him as troubled detective Alec Hardy in the ITV drama, but he’s equally good at playing the more fun roles.

Plus he already has experience of playing an iconic character having been The Doctor.

Peter Capaldi

Another who could swap the TARDIS for an Aston Martin.

Capaldi would be a great choice to play an older Bond if the franchise were to take a different approach.

Sam Heughan

Heughan is making a name for himself across the Atlantic as Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander.

He’ll be a busy man, however, with several series of the Highland drama in the works.

John Hannah

Experienced star Hannah has the wit and charm for the role.

However, he’d perhaps be a better choice for a Bond parody after his sublime performance in Charlie Brooker’s cop show spoof A Touch of Cloth.

Ewan McGregor

McGregor has previously been offered the role but turned it down. Now though, he seems quite keen on it if recent interviews are anything to go by.

“I think it would be quite cool to play James Bond,” the 44-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Cabos Film Festival.

Gerard Butler

Hollywood superstar Butler would bring a huge name to the role – and someone who’s already been in a Bond film.

He makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance as a seaman in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Alan Cumming

His appearance as villain Boris Grishenko in GoldenEye during the Pierce Brosnan era probably rules him out, but he’d be an interesting choice for the role.

He’s recently been starring in now cancelled The Good Wife, so he may have an empty slot in his diary…

Richard Madden

Game of Thrones’ Robb Stark may be a little young to take on the role but he would bring a touch of charm to the character.

The Elderslie-born star has most recently been seen on the big screen alongside another possible future Bond, Idris Elba, in Bastille Day.
