New Proms director David Pickard confirmed dancing and sequins for both performers and the audience, adding: “There’s quite a good chance it will be the campest prom ever.”

The night joins a diverse programme of concerts that also features two Late Night Proms dedicated to musician David Bowie and French composer Pierre Boulez, which had been planned since before Boulez’s death in January this year.

The Bowie celebration will be a “re-imagining not tribute” of music spanning the Starman’s career, performed by Berlin collective s t a r g a z e and its artistic director Andre de Ridder, with as-yet-unconfirmed special guests.

Pickard will also be bringing music to the people as the festival expands to four new venues, including American composer Steve Reich in a multi-storey car park in Peckham and Shakespeare-inspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death.

To coincide with the Olympics, staged in Rio de Janeiro during the Proms season, the Simon Bolivar and Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestras will bring both classical and, in a special late night event, popular music of Latin America to the Proms.

Juan Diego Florez

Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez will be hoping to avoid being enveloped in knickers thrown by enamoured fans as Jonas Kaufmann was last year when he joins three BBC choirs and, for the first time, 16 young singers from the BBC Proms Youth Ensemble for the world-famous Last Night Of The Proms.

Other highlights include a 10-concerto celebration of the cello and Lithuanian Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla’s first centre-stage performance with The City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra before she takes residency as musical director in September.

Quincy Jones

Six decades of famed producer Quincy Jones’s music will be represented at a special night with Jules Buckley and his Metropole Orkest, although Pickard said he did not know what involvement Jones would have directly in the concert.

Musician Jamie Cullum will be returning to the Proms with the Heritage Orchestra and Roundhouse Choir and has promised to use “every part of the Royal Albert Hall”.

The BBC Proms run from July 15 to September 10. Tickets go on general sale on May 7 at 9am.
