Big Hollywood names are like buses.
You wait for ages and then four come along at once!
Last week I caught up with a quartet of the most famous men in movies Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline.
I travelled from Los Angeles to New York to speak to all of them as they promoted their new comedy movie, Last Vegas.
Michael Douglas is someone I’ve met a few times, and I was made up when he walked in and said: “Rossy, how ya doing?”
Behind him was the one and only Robert De Niro, so I was understandably a wee bit nervous.
But then Michael added: “Hey, have ya met Bobby?”
I wasn’t sure who he was talking about for a moment, before it became apparent he was referring to his co-star.
His pals know him as Bobby, but I couldn’t refer to the ever-so-slightly intimidating star of Taxi Driver and Goodfellas in that way.
I panicked for a minute. Did I call him Robert? Mr De Niro? For a moment I was going to call him Boaby or Rab, but ended up settling for Sir!
The three of us had a good chat. The publicity people put De Niro and Michael Douglas together for one set of interviews, and Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline together for the other set.
I think it’s because De Niro is really just a bit shy.
He was friendly enough, but I’m not quite sure he likes doing these interviews much.
I can understand that lengthy press tours can probably be a bit of a slog sometimes.
Michael, on the other hand, was his usual charming self. He’s going through a hot streak right now.
He won an Emmy for his performance as flamboyant piano man Liberace in Behind The Candelabra and the Wall Street star looks to be hitting a career purple patch.
Earlier this year, it was revealed he had split up with Catherine Zeta-Jones, but afterwards Michael said they were working at saving their marriage.
Michael has always been an amiable, open interviewee and he was happy to talk about his relationship.
He said he and Catherine were still working at things.
It doesn’t seem like many Hollywood marriages go the distance, it would be good to see this one survive to me they seem like a nice couple.
The movie, Last Vegas, has been billed as “The Hangover for seniors”.
Four ageing men go to Las Vegas for a big stag do before one of them, played by Michael, gets married.
In the movie he’s engaged to a woman much younger than him I’m sure that role was a stretch for him!
After the De Niro and Douglas interview, it was time to move on to Freeman and Kline.
There’s no mistaking Morgan Freeman’s voice, of course. I could listen to him read the phone book.
I was overawed when he first started speaking and he only asked what chair he should sit in!
We got to chatting about his voice, and Morgan told me there’s a guy here in Hollywood who does a great impression of him.
The star of The Shawshank Redemption and Invictus is so nice he gets this impressionist to do voiceovers for adverts so he can earn a bit of money. How great is that?
Kevin Kline won an Oscar for A Fish Called Wanda, so he really knows his comedy. He undoubtedly gets the best line in the movie, but I won’t spoil it for you.
It’s a bit risque but is delivered perfectly the director had to battle to keep it in the film. I’m glad they did though, it’s perfect.
When you see it you’ll know what I mean.
Oddly enough, this is the first time any of these four actors have appeared in the same movie.
I asked all four what was surprising about working with each other and they all said the same thing absolutely nothing!
All of them have won an Oscar for their acting talents and all studied each other beforehand. Actors are a bit like footballers in that way.
Instead of studying their opponents, they study their co-stars.
All the guys in Last Vegas seemed to know every beat and nuance of the others’ acting styles.
The movie is good fun, and it has a great heart it’s released in the UK on Friday.
