No home is no calamity for Jodie Prenger.
Musical star Jodie Prenger says she doesn’t mind being on a long tour because her house is currently out of bounds.
The Blackpool singer is starring in Calamity Jane, which is two months into a mammoth 13-month UK tour.
“I don’t have a home to go to right now, because I don’t have a roof on my house,” she laughed.
“I’m having lots of building work done and I’m also having a little house built for my chickens.”
Jodie stars alongside former Emmerdale star Tom Lister, who played Carl King in the soap, in the story made famous by Doris Day.
“I love Doris Day. I grew up watching her and Secret Love is one of my favourite songs,” the 35-year-old continued.
“She has an animal sanctuary, which is what I want to do. So long as I can follow Doris’ path I’ll do well. I have lots of pets, including turtles, fish, parrots, dogs and chickens.
“If my animals are OK, that’s the main thing. I think my dogs are better fed than I am! When I’m off on tour my fella looks after them. He’s as potty about animals as I am.”
Jodie got engaged to Simon Booth in 2012, but they’ve struggled to schedule a wedding due to their hectic lifestyles.
“I think we’re going to have a shotgun wedding because of work,” she joked.
“But it’s definitely going to happen we’re like a married couple anyway. I want to go to Vegas for the ceremony, but he wants a romantic trip to Italy.”
Jodie, who won BBC musical competition I’d Do Anything six years ago, says her dream role would be Gypsy or a TV show similar to Paul O’Grady’s dog show, although, she says: “I’d probably just take them all home with me”.
For now though she’s loving being part of Calamity Jane and taking it to so many places throughout the UK.
“Lots of shows can have a short shelf life in the West End because the tickets are so expensive.
“People can’t afford to take their families. But it’s not like that on tour, it’s more affordable and the whole family comes along. We’ve actually had to add more dates because it’s sold so well.”
Calamity Jane is at the Edinburgh Playhouse from Tuesday to Saturday, and will visit Aberdeen and Glasgow next June.
