Kevin McNaughton could be heading back to Scottish football

Kevil McNaughton knows the heartbreak the losers at Hampden and Wembley on Saturday will feel.

With Cardiff City, he was on the losing side in both FA Cup and League Cup Finals.

The versatile defender clocked up almost 300 appearances for the Bluebirds over nine years in the Welsh capital and is set to be rewarded with a testimonial.

But after a “nightmare” loan spell at Bolton Wanderers last season, the former Aberdeen star wants to return to the Scottish Premiership.

“I’ve thought about coming back up the road,” he admitted.

“I wouldn’t mind doing that to be honest. I don’t really want to bounce from club to club around the leagues down south, having a year here, a year there.

“I’d rather come up the road and get a couple of years somewhere if that’s possible.

“It’s just one of those situations where I’ll need to see whether the option’s there and have a think about it.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of clubs already, but I’m not 100% sure what I’ll be doing.

“I’m coming back from injury just now and that’s my focus. But Scotland is definitely attractive.”

Injury specifically a broken leg was the trigger for his season from hell at Bolton.

But the 32-year-old insists he’s ready to put his troubles behind him by proving his worth week-in, week-out.

He said: “Bolton was a nightmare to be honest. I had a hamstring problem, then just when I was getting back into the team I ended up breaking my fibula. It was a kick, nothing major, but I knew something wasn’t right.

“At this point I’m still three or four weeks away from being 100%, but I’m on the road and I want to get back to playing every week. That’s what I’m looking for.”
