Irish soda bread

Ingredients

175 g (6 oz) strong white flour
450 g (1 lb) brown flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp sugar
¾ tsp salt
575 ml (1 pint) buttermilk

Preheat oven to 200C, 400F or gas mark 6.

Mix dry ingredients together then add buttermilk. Mix well together to make a soft dough then turn onto a well-floured surface. Shape into two loaves and place on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Cut a cross on top of each loaf with a sharp knife.

Bake for around 35 minutes until bread sounds hollow when tapped on the base.
