Ingredients:
100 g (4 oz) butter
175 g (6 oz) light soft brown sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
350 g (12 oz) plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp ground ginger
1 large Lion egg, beaten
Grated rind of 1 lemon
65 g (1½ oz) icing sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice
Smarties and ribbons to decorate
Preheat oven to 190C, 375F or gas mark 5. Grease two baking sheets.
Melt butter, sugar and syrup until smooth. Cool. Sift flour, soda and ginger together into a bowl. Stir butter mix into flour with egg and lemon rind and bring together to form a dough. Roll out and use a 7.5 cm (3 in) round cutter to press out around 20 biscuits. Transfer to baking sheets and pull each round into an egg shape. Make a ribbon hole in each biscuit with a skewer. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cool.
Mix icing sugar and lemon juice to make icing and use to stick Smarties to biscuits. Leave to set then thread through ribbons.
