This couple suspended their wedding… to watch Still Game!

THEY’RE game for a laugh.

A bride and groom halted their wedding celebrations – so they and their guests could watch the comeback episode of Still Game.

The couple from Dumfries were hosting a dinner for their wedding party as part of their nuptials in Edinburgh when they told them they’d have to stop proceedings to watch the new series of the BBC 1 Comedy.

Leanne and Stuart Mcsherry had just been married in the capital’s Norton House Hotel when they surprised guests with their telly announcement.

The couple had planned their day around the return of the show after bride Leanne told Stuart she wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Leanne said: “Stuart could probably have lived without Still Game on our wedding day but for me it’s the best comedy out and really brings the family together for a good laugh.

“I waited all year for the new series to start, and it was a no- brainer that we would take half an hour out of the celebrations to watch it.”

The first episode of series seven, titled Gadgets, saw Jack and Victor and the gang at Craiglang ordering lots of quirky products from a catalogue and trying them out – with disastrous consequences.

And while there were no flat caps, wally dugs or dodgy bath gadgets in sight, the wedding was like a mini episode of the series with its own comedic twists and turns.

The couple even had to change rooms after the initial one they booked for their honeymoon night wasn’t big enough to accommodate their guests and came without a TV set.

Leanne said: “The duty manager, Chris, went out his way to make it possible – even ensuring we were upgraded to a suite with a nice telly so we could fit all our guests in.”

The couple were having their wedding photos taken when Still Game was scheduled to appear on the TV so they asked their wedding photographer, Darren Wyllie, to stop taking pictures and follow them up to the suite.

Darren laughed: “When I arrived at the Norton House Hotel there was this amazing buzz as there generally is around weddings, but this was a buzz surrounding the Still Game episode.

“I couldn’t believe it. The bride was adamant that she was watching Still Game when it came on, which was great.”

He added:  “We were just about to do the family group evening photographs when I had a look at my watch, it was 9.15pm.

“I made a joke about only having 15 minutes to do the photographs before the start of the episode and, before I knew it, we were on our way up to the bride’s room, telly on and ready for the action.

“It was great that everyone took half an hour out, especially the bride and groom to enjoy Still Game, and of course I also got to watch to so it was a win for me. Congratulations to the happy
couple Jack and Victor… I mean Mr and Mrs Mcsherry!”

The Mcsherry wedding wasn’t the first celebration to be heavily influenced by the hit BBC TV series which is now shown across the wider UK network.

Glasgow lad John Preston had a Still Game-themed wedding just a week ago, featuring signs from The Clansman and place mat settings with characters from the show. He joked: “The missus said no to pie and beans for the meal and pints of Fusilier.”

And singer Amy McDonald once received a Jack and Victor-topped cake for her birthday.
