Going to a party in the county jail

By Sarah Johnson

LAST week the staff from Kilmarnock Prison handed over a cheque to The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal for £1000 — and there’s absolutely nothing criminal in that!
The money was raised at their Christmas party where more than 100 people danced the night away at the Hurlford Bowling Club on December 19, with party-goers from Scotland’s only private prison paying £2 to enjoy a night full of Jailhouse Rock!

The Kilmarnock Prison staff proudly hand over their cheque. From left — Nick Cameron, Gwen McBride, Roslyn Neely of CHAS, Lynette Henry and Stuart Nelson.

Gwen McBride, Systems Administrator at the prison, was sitting reading The Sunday Post at the beginning of December with only two weeks before the big party when the CHAS page caught her eye.
“We raise money for a charity each year through sales of tickets and raffles,” says Gwen, “but this year we hadn’t chosen a charity by early December.
As soon as I read the paper that day I knew the money had to go to CHAS.”
Approaching the rest of the social committee, Stuart Nelson and Lynette Henry, Gwen told them her idea and they were delighted to agree.
“Children’s charities are very close to my family’s heart,” explains Gwen, whose cousin’s little boy died last year when he was only nine.
“My cousin and her husband, who also works at the prison, were given the option to take him to Rachel House, but it was too far away. Had Robin House been built they could have gone there, but they chose to nurse him at home.
“Now I support children’s and cancer charities all I can.”
Full of festive spirit, the staff let their hair down and had a splendid time, and all in a great cause.
“I was there, there’s no show without Punch!” Gwen laughs.
“People who couldn’t come because they were working donated money.
“Everyone was happy to put their hand in their pocket and give as much as they could.”
Roslyn Neely, collecting the cheque on behalf of CHAS, said, “Many thanks have to all those who arranged the evening and everyone who donated money.
“People’s generosity never ceases to amaze me.”
