Freda Stewart, from Perth, is one of the team gearing up to go to Nepal with Andrew in four weeks’ time. But as well as all the training Freda needs to do, she’s been busy raising cash for CHAS.
Challenge
And it’s not just Freda. After friends and family heard about the mammoth fundraiser, they’ve been keen to do their bit.
A month ago Freda organised a triple challenge of fitness classes at Norwich Union in Perth. About 40 energetic souls exercised their way to £500 for CHAS. Two weeks ago Freda held a ceilidh at Letham Farmhouse Hotel in Perth with locals reeling in yet more cash.
Her daughter Kirsty, niece Claire and family friends Nicola and Jacqui have bravely volunteered to do a parachute jump for CHAS — but not Freda! She says, “Poor Jacqui is very brave. She’s terrified of heights, but she has loads of sponsors.
“But I can’t do it in case I injure myself before the walk.”
Otherwise we’re sure she’d have jumped at the chance!
This weekend Freda’s been on the fundraising trail again by teaming up with 10 pals, including her sister Fay, to paint Country Fare, her friend Stuart’s coffee shop in Aberfeldy. Of course, they did it at a price and every penny will go to CHAS.
Ben Nevis
Freda’s done a bit of hillwalking in the past and climbed Ben Nevis last year, but next month will be by far her biggest challenge yet. She knows it’s all for a good cause. “No matter what culture we are, we share the welfare of our children and want to do the best for them.
“My friend’s son goes to Rachel House and I’ve seen the benefits of what they do.”
Andrew, who raised £37,000 with a team trekking the Great Wall of China for our campaign two and a half years ago, is looking forward to this latest challenge.
He said, “There are several benefits, both to the participants and to Nepal, which is one of the poorest nations in the world.”
But CHAS is set to benefit as well and Andrew’s hopeful too. “I’m very committed to CHAS. It’s a very worthy cause which touches the hearts of all the people in Scotland.”
