Help us to help them

“We thought it was
time we did our bit”

By Gary Moug

EVERY SUNDAY, Susan and Brian Foley turn to the CHAS page in The Sunday Post to find out what weird and wonderful things our readers have been doing to raise money.
With four children and seven grandchildren, the Penicuik couple understandably take a keen interest in anything that benefits youngsters.
For at least two years now, they’ve spoken about “doing their bit” and organising their own event to contribute to the appeal.
Things kept getting in the way, but a few weeks ago they decided to stop talking about it, get out there and do something.
Susan and Brian set about arranging a special fun day in honour of the campaign. The family event took place at Shottstown Miners Club, where a dazzling £623 was raised.
Susan said, “It was a glorious day. We had darts, dominoes and pool competitions and my friend Lesley kept the kids entertained by organising a karaoke contest.
“Entry was £1 and we also had a raffle and a tombola. Local stores and businesses were incredibly generous and donated dozens of prizes, and the club donated bottles of whisky and vodka.
“Around 60 people turned up, including a contingent from the nearby town of Rosewell. They’ve already said they’d like to organise a similar event to return the favour.
“Everyone had a rare time and it was great so much was raised. We’ve been very fortunate to have healthy children and grandchildren, but we appreciate not everyone is so lucky. I’ve never been to Rachel House but I’ve read all about it and think it’s fantastic a second children’s hospice is to be built.
“We follow the campaign every week, so it’s great to be able to say we’ve helped.”
