Colin’s best-seller
is just magic

By Craig Robertson
OUR campaign is set for a massive boost as a novel idea for raising cash looks set to hit the jackpot.
In February, we told you how Colin Foreman of Kinross had written a children’s book — with all the profits to go to CHAS — after coming up with the idea in the gardens of Rachel House.
Well, the book has taken off in a huge way, easily outstripping anyone’s expectations and has rocketed up the best-seller charts.
Even with relatively little publicity, To The End Of The World — aimed at nine to 14-year-olds — now sits proudly at number three on Waterstone’s list.
No.4

Online distributors iobooks.com has it at number four, headed only by works by Anthony Horowitz, Charlie Higson and Roald Dahl.
The book tells of the magical adventures through time of three children, based on Colin’s own children Peter (now 17), James (15) and Laura (14).
Colin — a businessman who is constantly flying back and forward to Europe — had never done any writing before, but when it was suggested he try, he thought, “what better way to while the hours away sitting in airport lounges than doing something for the kids at Rachel House?”
He’s delighted at the book’s success but admits he’s surprised at just how well it has done.
“I thought if we could get into the top 20 on Waterstone’s list that would be great,” he said.
“But we hit the top 10 then climbed to number three. It’s doing very well.
“We had an initial print run of 5000 copies but are now talking about a second run and even a third.
“I’ve had around 200 e-mails from children who say they love the book and are demanding book two. It’s pretty exciting. I’m doing a reading in Waterstone’s in Edinburgh on Tuesday evening and have written a chapter especially for that. I’ve never done anything like this before and must admit I’m nervous about it.”
Adventure
Morag Rhodes, CHAS head of PR, said, “Colin’s book is an exciting mixture of adventure and philosophy and it’s the sort of book that would brighten up the dullest day.
“Although the book is aimed mainly at young people, it’s a good read for adults and I’m really looking forward to the next one.”
John Webb, children’s buyer for Waterstone’s, is very enthusiastic about To The End Of The World
“Colin approached us with his idea and sent the draft of his manuscript. I read the first chapter and was hooked.
“We thought the whole project was a great idea and a really worthwhile cause. However, we would never have taken it on unless the book was good enough.
“But I have to admit the sales have exceeded my expectations. It’s selling just a few copies less than Eoin Colfer’s latest book and has been in the top 10 of our children’s Heroes and Villains list for the past three weeks and is selling well all across the UK.
“I hope sales continue to go really well and make a lot of money for CHAS.”
To The End Of The World is published by Myroy Books, and costs £7.99.
