Help us to help them

Hugh and May’s party raised a brilliant £500

By Murray Scougall
HUGH and May Smith, from Renfrew, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a party at their home for close friends and family.
And they joined a select, but growing, club of CHAS supporters who decided that if anyone wished to give them a present they should donate money towards our appeal instead. But Hugh and May went one step further and told their family not to buy them any Christmas presents either!
Purpose
May explained, “At this stage of our lives there isn’t much we need, so we thought any money spent on gifts could be used for a much better purpose.”
Everyone had a great time at the party and the 16 guests donated £375. Hugh and May had also been collecting spare change, which rounded the total up to a brilliant £500 to go to Robin House.

Hugh and May present their cheque to CHAS representative Celia MacLean.

May explained, “One of the reasons we wanted to donate the money to CHAS was because we had a handicapped daughter ourselves and know what it’s like to get some much-needed respite.
“In our day we didn’t have anything like Rachel House available to us, so we couldn’t receive the same help that CHAS offers to families nowadays. We know how it feels, so we wanted to help others in a similar position as the more people who can receive assistance the better.”
