Our campaign won the battle on the greens
This was the ninth year Pitlochry BC has pledged their support for CHAS — having raised nearly £25,000 in total.
It was a suggestion to the club by former member David Roy that led to this tremendous effort. While stationed at Kinross police station, David had seen how Rachel House had struggled and was moved by the determination of those involved. He decided the club should do something to help.
Since then they have remained loyal to CHAS, each year trying to raise even more money.
Club secretary Elma Spence said, “We’ve always had a friendly game both home and away with Newtonmore. Our President, John Anderson, was a Newtonmore player until he moved to Pitlochry so we’ve made it a tradition to remain close.
“We have charity days and this year we clashed, both of us going for July 31.
“When it came to handing over the cheques to CHAS we decided to turn one of our friendly matches into an occasion.”
So, last Saturday, the evening of the cheque presentation, Newtonmore won the Shepherd Trophy, beating Pitlochry on home ground.
“The games are always good, but it was made even more special to be taking part for The Sunday Post CHAS Appeal, which is such a worthy cause.”
Huge support
The £2700 raised by Pitlochry on the charity day, where 24 other teams from across Scotland came forth in battle, comes mainly from a mighty raffle.
Elma said, “We get huge support from everyone in town from the locals to businesses. We raised about £1400 from the raffle with more than 200 prizes, the rest came mostly from donations.”
Blair Atholl Distillery ensured all the winners walked away with a nice bottle of whisky — with Kirkcaldy team, St Clair, victorious on the day.
Newtonmore secretary Mary Laidlaw said, “Over the years CHAS has sent literature out to the club to raise funds and we have always given donations, but this year we thought why not hold a charity day just for them?
“We invited all the teams in the valley to join us, it was a shame Pitlochry couldn’t come to ours and we missed theirs, but that day we had a common goal, to raise as much as we could for CHAS.
“It was a very successful occasion and the least we can do for a charity that achieves so much.” |
