Help us to help them

The wetter the better . . . for us

By Paul Hastie

THE STAFF of William Grant & Sons distillers in Bellshill, Glasgow, really made a splash to help our appeal.
Not only did they raise an incredible £8000 for CHAS, they made sure their bosses got a good soaking.
The highlight of this year’s charity events saw sporting senior staff put their heads in the stocks, and face a few buckets of water from employees.

Freda gives the cheque to Celia McLean from CHAS, with the Willam Grant charity committee and other staff who helped out.

Encouragement came from Freda Barton, Janet Andrew, June McGuiness and Mary McMahon. The fantastic four dedicated themselves to raising money for CHAS over the past eight months.
It’s no wonder they’ve collected such an impressive amount — the ladies have 10 years’ practise behind them. Every year the company charity committee devotes every spare moment to raising money for a good cause.
The cash is usually split between a number of charities, but this time they decided to give everything to Robin House. Freda explained, “We raised money for CHAS when Rachel House opened, and we wanted to do something again. We held a meeting and the workers were happy to give it all to CHAS. It’s a brilliant charity.”
The cash has been trickling in since January, until the ladies were deluged during their big event this summer.
In June they organised a fete on the firm’s premises in Glasgow, and raised nearly £6000. All the staff pitched in to lend a hand, not least those who volunteered to get wet.
Good sports
Freda said, “It didn’t rain all day, which was just as well because our bosses had already had a soaking. They were really good sports and brought a lot of cash — everyone was lining up to have a go at their own manager.”
In July and August the ladies topped up the total with sales from their charity stall at Blochairn market in Glasgow and Dufftown Highland games. “We run a charity shop each week at work,” said Freda. “We sell T-shirts, ice buckets, glasses and other promotional items donated by the company.”
Celia McLean from CHAS was pleased to accept the cheque from Freda. She said, “The ladies’ efforts have been phenomenal. It really is something to be proud of.”
