In at the deep end on West Highland Way
Challenge
Her five pool pals, Janet Ireland, Marion Paton, Eileen McIntosh, Anna McDonald and Carol Gillies, agreed to look out their hiking boots and, take up the mountain challenge.
Margaret couldn’t wait to take to the hills. “I love keeping fit,” she said.
“I’ve been following the CHAS campaign in The Sunday Post since day one, and have taken part in two Marafun days.
“I thought it would
be a good idea to get the ladies together to raise some money for the appeal, and enjoy walking the West Highland Way at the same time.”
The tireless team meet twice a week at the over-50s club at Erskine Swimming Pool, and go out for walks every evening, but even Margaret knows her limits.
They travelled light on their week-long trip, with the help of a backpacking company to deliver their luggage between B&B stops overnight.
Hike
The weight off their shoulders allowed the group to have a slightly more relaxing hike through the hills.
“It was good to have a bed to sleep in at night, but it was still hard work,” said Margaret.
“We kept meeting groups of tourists, who couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw this group of old Scottish ladies walking up a mountain.
“There was one Spanish lady who laughed every time we passed each other along the way. She said ‘You are crazy’.
“We were very lucky with the weather, it had been quite bad the week before.”
The walking women weren’t entirely worn out by the West Highland adventure. Margaret is hoping to do it all over again next summer.
