Dashing through
the . . . slush!
By Steven Bowron

OVER THE past 15 years Ray Main from Dunbar has amassed the sheet music for over 100 carols from all over the
world.
They’ve come in pretty useful in her role as conductor of Dunbar and District Choral Society. The 50-strong choir puts on a charity Christmas concert each year and, as well as the traditional
Silent Night and Away In A Manger, Ray slips in some exotic Yuletide fare from far-flung lands.
“Last year we had one from New Zealand, sung in Maori,” she grins. “Hadn’t a clue what we were singing about, though.”
This year, Polish and French carols will be given an airing — all safely performed in English!
And though the programme includes many family favourites, some will have ironic twists.
Jingle Bells, for instance, will start “Dashing through the slush”!
“As well as carols, there will be readings which tend to get more comic
as the evening goes on, from the works of AA Milne and the skating sequence from
The Pickwick Papers.
There will also be wine, soft drinks and mince pies,” promises Ray.
The event starts at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, December 15, at the West Church in Haddington. Tickets, £4 (£2 for children) are available from Main the Saddlers, High Street, Haddington, or at
the church on the night. All proceeds will go to our appeal.
