Stories of CHAS children inspired the lollipop man

By Euan Duguid

THE SUNDAY POST hospice appeal has enjoyed sweet success over the past three years and we’ve just received another delight to savour — from a kind-hearted lollipop man.
John Phimister, from Cornton, near Stirling, has manned crossing patrols for six years and he’s recently helped our drive come closer to yet another milestone — by donating £800.

John with Sheila Morrison, owner of The Chalet, with some of their football cards and a cheque for CHAS.

“Since your appeal was launched I’ve followed the deeply moving stories of the children and their families with an avid interest,” said John.
“I’m a grandfather of eight healthy grandchildren and, due to the nature of my work, I’m surrounded by vibrant and lively children on a daily basis.
Troubling
“It’s a joy to be around these kids, but your campaign has made me aware of the troubling situations children of Rachel House face and the vital need for a second children’s hospice.
“But all of the stories I’ve read about Rachel House are positive happy ones.
“And if we can be a small part in bringing a degree of normality and relief to terminally ill children by contributing to a second hospice, I think it’s the least we can do.”
With John’s infectious enthusiasm, and the generous support of patrons of The Chalet bar in Cornton, he’s managed to raise the cash through a series of social evenings and selling around 130 football score prediction cards.
He explained, “These things don’t earn a great deal of money individually, but we believe many hands make light work, so everybody at The Chalet has been forthcoming with their support.
“They too have children and grandchildren and are all too aware of the happiness they bring, but also empathetic of how saddening it would be if that joy was tainted through the uncertainty and trauma of terminal illness.
“The children’s hospice is something the people of Scotland feel passionately about and we are proud to be part of a campaign that is making a real difference.”
